  24. This program is based on a book called "Doctor Who - The Universal Databank",
  25. by Jean-Marc Lofficier. The information is also stored on Jean-Marc's
  26. webpage for all to see. I asked him for permission to use the info
  27. in my program and he wished me good luck.

  31. INTRODUCTION.

  33.     Hello to all you Doctor Who fans out there, or even non-Doctor Who
  34. fans as well (I'll talk to you whether you're a fan or not). This as the
  35. title suggests is a Doctor Who Database. Almost all the characters from
  36. the first Doctor to the Seventh are included.
  37.     I've always loved the idea of having a massive database of my
  38. favourite all time program, with all the information I ever need about it.
  39.     
  40.         This original project took about a year to complete. There have
  41. been many changes since the original 1.2 version. In fact it seems like
  42. I have taken a step backwards, as the original version had a nice gui,
  43. graphics and pictures. The problem was that the original program was
  44. written in Amospro which is a nice language but has the problem of not
  45. working too well with graphics cards and interacting with other software.
  46. If you would like to try out the original with the graphics it will remain
  47. on my webpage until I sort out the new gui for my new `Doctor Who` database.

  50.         So now I have started to learn C. The rewrite in C has taken me about
  51. 2 months to complete, and even though it works perfectly, it desperately needs
  52. a nice gui and graphics again. This will be my next project to come.
  53. I haven't even learnt how to do a gui yet so this could be interesting.
  54. Anyway here is the cli release of my program and I hope it will be of use.

  68. THE TECHNICAL BIT (Or the Boring bit nobody reads, I don't know why I bother).

  70.     The actual text data for this program originally took a whole
  71. 880k. Obviously this is quite a lot, and wouldn't leave much room on the
  72. disk for the program. It took me about 3 months to work out a way of
  73. actually compressing the text down so that I could fit the program and
  74. data onto one disk.
  75.     I think the whole project took me about a year to complete,
  76. and by the end I was desperate to get it finished. It took so long
  77. that I've probably memorised half the information it displays and I
  78. don't really need the program.
  79.     I'm sorry if this history is quite short, as I'm not the sort
  80. of person to write down every date I did a new modification. And I
  81. suppose you couldn't careless as long as the program actually works.
